A felony investigation is underway following the tragic death of an 81-year-old lady who was struck by a police motorbike escorting the Duchess of Edinburgh. Helen Holland was hit at a junction in Earl’s Court, West London, on May 10. The police officer using the vehicle is being investigated for offences, including inflicting death by dangerous driving, by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
Holland suffered extreme accidents within the crash, together with multiple broken bones and vital inner accidents, resulting in her demise two weeks later. The officer can also be being investigated for causing dying by careless or thoughtless driving and potential gross misconduct. However, this does not essentially mean that charges or disciplinary proceedings will follow.
IOPC Director Amanda Rowe emphasised the significance of a “thorough, independent investigation” to establish the total circumstances surrounding the incident. Value added, “At the tip of our investigation, we’ll decide whether to refer the matter to the Crown Prosecution Service for a charging determination and whether or not the officer ought to face disciplinary proceedings.”
